Katie O’Hara LaBrie (b.1982) is a conductor, composer and cellist from Northern Virginia. She has taught all levels of orchestra in Fairfax County over the past 15 years from elementary to high school. Currently she is the orchestra director at Luther Jackson Middle School in Falls Church, VA. Her ensembles frequently receive superior ratings at state assessment. Recently, the LJMS Chamber Orchestra was honored as the only middle school orchestra to perform at the 2018 Virginia Music Educations Association Conference.
Mrs. LaBrie holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from St. Olaf College and a Master of Music in Instrumental Conducting from George Mason University. Her primary conducting teachers include Anthony Maiello, Steven Amundson & Timothy Mahr, as well as David Carter on cello.
In addition to her love of teaching Mrs. LaBrie is a published composer and arranger. Most all of her current publications have been honored as J. W. Pepper Editor’s Choice during their publication years. She is a contributing author to Sound Innovations Solos and the Compose Yourself Series through Alfred Music and Smart Music.
Mrs. LaBrie is a member of NAFME, VMEA, VBODA and ASTA. She is an active guest conductor, adjudicator, and clinician. Her VMEA state conference presentations include a new music reading session in 2015 and a session on how to practice with purpose in 2017. In 2019 she presented a new music clinic at the first ever Virginia Department of Education Conference. In 2021 she will be presenting "Off the record: Practicing with Purpose" at the Virtual ASTA National Conference.
Mrs. LaBrie is the founding conductor of the Fairfax Chamber Players and founding co-director Stallion Summer Strings Summer Camp. She is the co-creator of "the Big IDEA" practice method which is available for all at www.practiceiwthpurpose.net. She lives in Fairfax with her husband Joe who is a middle school band director, and their eight year-old budding musician, Liam.
